Stories from the Kist

Part of Edinburgh Tradfest

Join us for a special evening of storytelling in Scots and Doric, hosted by Tobar an Dualchais/Kist o Riches in which three of Scotland’s most gifted storytellers will share stories relating to nature and place.

There are almost 8000 stories on the Tobar an Dualchais/Kist o Riches website and the guest storytellers will use it as inspiration to find stories which they will tell in their own way. The event will showcase some of the wonderful stories to be found on the site and will also highlight the importance of storytelling in Scottish communities.

Jess Smith is happy telling any kind of story but her true gift lies in the rich kist of Traveller tales she has gathered since childhood. From a Scottish Traveller family, Jess was privileged to sit round camp fires and be enthralled with stories of ancient kings, dragons, and all manner of heroes. She hopes that her storytelling brings people closer to understanding the Traveller community.

Tim Porteus loves sharing the fascinating world of folklore, mythology and legend, and tells stories about them with passion and humour. He has a deep love of nature and uses stories to re-connect people to the wonders of our natural world, while enhancing our knowledge and appreciation of our threatened natural environment.

Jackie Ross is from Aberdeenshire and has a love of the countryside and a passion for local lore and traditions. She is a founder member of the Grampian Association of Storytellers and works part-time for the Elphinstone Institute where part of her remit is to support the development of diversity in storytelling in the North-east.

This event is supported by the Year of Stories 2022 Community Stories Fund.
