Kabantu: Freehand Album Launch

(Mon 10 Oct: 7.30pm)

Kabantu means "of the people" - stemming from the South African philosophy of Ubuntu: "I am who I am because of who we all are".

Kabantu are an award-winning quartet from Manchester who compose and perform original folk fusion music, inspired by global sounds and cross genre virtuosity. Their individual classical training brought them and their varied musical influences together, combining the Latin grooves of a German percussionist with the furious fiddling of a Scottish violinist, to name just one example.

Since forming in 2014, Kabantu’s performance highlights include the BBC Proms and TedX, live sessions for BBC Radio 3 In Tune, BBC World on 3 and a guest appearance on Cbeebies, plus an array of renowned festivals and venues including Lucerne Festival, Luxembourg Philharmonie, The Bridgewater Hall, King’s Place, Cadogan Hall, Celtic Connections, Shrewsbury, Warwick, Orkney, Shetland, and Cambridge Folk Festivals. Kabantu are the winners of the coveted Royal Over-Seas League Competition 2017 in the mixed ensemble category and received a 4* Guardian review for their 2018 debut album “Of the People”.

Freehand is Kabantu’s newest release for 2022. A 10-track album of all original music, inspired by global folk sounds.
