LGBTQ+, Storytelling

Queer Folks' Tales

with Turan Ali, Cera Impala, Kate Hammer and Colin Higgins

Welcome to Queer Folks’ Tales, a new storytelling series where queer storytellers from a diverse range of backgrounds, ages and cultures share stories of LGBTQ+ lives, past and present.

Sometimes hilarious, often moving, occasionally shocking, the mix of stories across the year will be as varied as the range of storytellers we are inviting. Household names will feature alongside new and diverse queer storytellers from the different communities of Scotland and many of the stories told in the Queer Folks' Tales evenings will be true stories of LGBTQ+ experience in Scotland today.

Hosted by Turan Ali, featuring Cera Impala, Kate Hammer & Colin Higgins.

Turan Ali has been producing, directing and writing BBC Radio dramas and comedies for over 20 years. He has also been telling stories of queer lives and experiences on stage since 2012, including his Edinburgh Fringe one man show Don't Frighten the Straights (2019) which toured to Vienna, Amsterdam and the King's Head Theatre in London. His new one-man show An International Slut will be coming to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in 2023.

Kate Hammer studied Creative Writing at Concordia University (Canada), and has a Masters in TV Fiction Writing from Glasgow Caledonian University. They are now living it up in Scotland and has performed internationally as an improviser, stand-up, sketch comedian and actor. Kate is the creator, producer and host of the monthly comedy hour and production company INFEMOUS, creating space for fem and non-binary folk to bring sketch, improv, and a monologist together in a safe and empowering way. They were also part of Short Circuit's Convergence Programme 2022, and semi-finalists for the LGTBQ+ New Comedian of the Year Award, and the Funny Women Award (ongoing).

Cera Impala creates songs that feel instantly familiar. Her whiskey-honeyed voice takes intimately crafted pieces to another time and place, one of dreams and magic -sensual as they are savage. Her music has been heard all over the world, Impala has toured internationally with her handpicked band, The New Prohibition. She will be sharing two stories-through-song with us this evening.

Colin Higgins is a rising star from the Glasgow comedy scene and has performed UK wide. He delights audience's with his cutting observations, brutal honesty and self deprecating style. His TV credits include the Billy Connolly docuseries 'Billy and Us' on BBC Scotland.
