July Central Heat Slam

Throughout 2023, Loud Poets have been running a massive Scotland-wide poetry slam tournament. Over the past several months, they’ve held regional heats across the country in the Highlands, North, West, South and East. It’s finally time for the Central Regional Heat!
The winner and runner-up win a place to compete at August’s Grand Slam Final at the Edinburgh International Book Festival for a £3000 prize. There will be twelve slammers competing, joined by our Sacrificial poet Matt Abbott.
Matt Abbott is a nationally-acclaimed poet, educator, and activist from Wakefield. His debut solo show Two Little Ducks explored the working-class Leave vote against the backdrop of his experiences volunteering at a Calais refugee camp. The show earned 5* reviews at Edinburgh Fringe 2017 and on a UK theatre tour in 2018 and the poems published as his debut collection by Verve in 2018. Matt's debut kids' poetry collection A Hurricane in my Head was a National Poetry Day selected title leading to an appearance on Blue Peter and a cameo in Beano magazine. He's also known for running spoken word record label Nymphs & Thugs since 2015 and fronting indie band Skint & Demoralised.
