with Nasim Rebecca Asl, Desree, Colin Nelson & Jim Monaghan

(Fri 16 Dec: 7:30pm)

Showcasing the top spoken word talent from Scotland and the UK! From laugh-out-loud funny, through the wonderfully surreal, to the thoughtful and emotional – Loud Poets continue to prove that Spoken Word has something for everyone.

Nasim Rebecca Asl is a Glasgow-based poet and journalist from Tyne and Wear. Her poetry has appeared in magazines including Poetry Wales, Gutter and Modern Poetry in Translation. In 2021 she was awarded a Scottish Book Trust New Writers Award for Poetry and in 2022 was shortlisted for the Edwin Morgan Poetry Award. She’s worked on projects with the Poetry Translation Centre, The Poetry Business and the Rugby League World Cup.

Desree is a spoken word artist, writer and facilitator based in London and Slough. Currently Artist in Residence for poetry collective EMPOWORD, Desree explores intersectionality, justice and social commentary. Poet In Residence for Glastonbury Festival 2022, Desree was shortlisted for the performance and film category in 2020 and was the recipient of the 2019's and 2022’s “Highly Commended” Out-Spoken Performance Prize. Desree has featured across the UK and internationally, including Glastonbury Festival 2019, Bowery Poetry Club New York, Sofar Sounds, Sunday Assembly, Bestival and Greenbelt Festival and is a part of the 2021/22 Jerwood Poetry In Performance cohort. Following the sell-out of her first self-published pamphlet I Find My Strength In Simple Things (2017), Burning Eye Books re-published the pamphlet in May 2021. For more info visit her website

Colin Nelson is an Edinburgh-based writer and performance poet who describes themselves as ‘A horrible man, writing horrible poems about horrible things. Horribly.’ His poetry applies graphic, visceral descriptions to the mundane to create fantastical narrative journeys and explorations.

Jim Monaghan is a poet and political activist based in Govanhill, Glasgow. A veteran of Scotland's spoken word scene, his collection Cumnock & Other Places was released in 2018, a second collection For Auld Intensive Purposes was released in September 2022.
