Spoken Word, Poetry

Loud Poets x Bad Betty Press

with Harry Baker, Beth Godfrey, Jasmine Cooray and James Kearns

(Fri 17 Nov: 7:30pm)

Don’t miss the next fantastic show from Scotland’s best spoken word night! From laugh-out-loud funny, through the wonderfully surreal, to the thoughtful and emotional – Loud Poets continue to prove that Spoken Word has something for everyone. November's edition is in collaboration with Bad Betty Press, made possible thanks to funding from the National Lottery through Creative Scotland and Arts Council England.

World Poetry Slam Champion Harry Baker is a poet and a maths graduate. He writes about important stuff like hope, dinosaurs and German falafel-spoons. His work has been shared on TED.com and viewed millions of times worldwide, as well as being translated into over 20 different languages. His collection Unashamed was published with Burning Eye in 2022 and after a sell-out run at the Edinburgh Fringe he toured his spoken word show of the same name around the UK. “Harry Baker’s intricate, quick-fire rhymes have always been on the impressive side of mind-blowing” - Scotsman.

STANZA Slam winner 2023 Beth Godfrey has come to spoken word via a background in theatre, fusing her love of words with her gift for performing. She has performed her work at the Traverse Theatre, the Edinburgh Fringe, Pianodome and the Festival of Physics. Six of her scripts have been produced by Strange Town and performed at The Storytelling Centre. She is Engagement Director for Stellar Quines Theatre Company and runs group poetry workshops for Open Book.

Jasmine Cooray is a poet, psychotherapist and facilitator. After spending her 20s oversharing on London’s poetry circuit, she moved on to developing creative writing projects for the Barbican, Southbank Centre, First Story, the National Literacy Trust and Arvon. She is also a WOW Festival speaker, BBC Performing Arts Fellow, and former Writer-in-Residence at the National University of Singapore. She can often be found up a tree, dancing to Mariah, making a Venn diagram, or elaborately collaging a bird. She is warmer than she first appears.

James Kearns is a poet based in Birmingham and Cape Town. His work focuses on experimentation and collaboration and explores how poetry can interact with other art forms. He has been a winner in the Streetcake Magazine Prize for Experimental Writing and his pamphlet featured in Ghost City Press’s 2022 Summer Series. His forthcoming project explores depictions of dementia in experimental poetry and publishing and his debut collection On the Subject of Fallen Things will be released by Bad Betty in November 2023.
