World Tales of the Nine Maidens

Part of Edinburgh Tradfest

(Sat 6 May: 2.30pm)

Mothers of the Norse God Heimdall. Morgan and her attendants on Avalon. Sisters at the heart of the founding myth of the Kenyan Gikuyu people. Dancers painted on the ancient cave of El Cogul in Catalunya.

Stories of nine women, whether attending a goddess or linked to men heroic and divine, exist across many world cultures. To accompany the new and expanded edition of his book The Nine Maidens, Stuart McHardy explores the various traditions referring to the Nine Maidens through a range of stories from myth and legend. Some of these stories are still told locally today, showing not just their own remarkable survival but how story itself is at the very heart of human culture.

The 2023 edition of The Nine Maidens: Priestesses of the Ancient World is published by Luath Press.
