Workshop: Contemporary Methods in Folklore
with Lucy Wright (Presented by TRACS) | Carrying Stream Festival/Fèill Sruth an Eòlais 2026
(Sat 14 Nov: 11am)
An exploration into new ways of practice-led approaches to folklore scholarship with artist Lucy Wright, whose work sits at the intersection of sculpture, performance, and research.
In this skills session suitable for both artists and researchers with an interest in folklore and traditional practices, gain insight into the creative methodologies behind Wright’s projects that often emerge from years of study into under-recognised and female-led traditions, situated where folklore, feminism and social practice meet. The morning will conclude with an informal folklore walk, looking for aspects of folklife happening right on our doorsteps. Presented by TRACS (Traditional Arts and Culture Scotland). If cost is a barrier to attendance, bursary places are available. No proof of eligibility required, please contact Reception to reserve a place.
Lucy Wright is a ‘hedge morris dancer’, author of the Folk is a Feminist Issue manifesta, and originator of ‘Dusking’, a 100% invented tradition and annual participatory project for anyone who has ever wanted to dance the sun down! Lucy’s work explores and reframes folk as a critical agent for contemporary resistance, speaking to the culture we create for ourselves and its radical potential. Through ongoing interventions in and with existing folk practices, and the playful invention of incisive new ones, her work encourages viewers to reimagine what kind of traditions we need to create today, for living together on a divided planet.

This autumn, explore the changing world of the traditional arts and the legacy of the great Scottish folklorist, songwriter and activist Hamish Henderson. Audiences, writers and traditional artists of all kinds will come together as part of the Carrying Stream Festival 2026 for gatherings, talks, sessions, workshops and performances.
The ethos of the festival is to celebrate and encourage the Carrying Stream; the organic route by which music, song, spoken word and all manner of culture, is passed on from person to person and from generation to generation. The Festival originated with the Edinburgh Folk Club and SSC is delighted to be part of its revival this year along with friends and partners across Edinburgh.
As t-fhoghar seo 's e saoghal ealan thraidiseanta agus dìleab Hamish MhicEanraig a tha romhainn. Bidh iomadh seòrsa duine a’ cruinneachadh aig Fèill Sruth an Eòlais 2026 - bho sgriobhaidearan gu seinneadairean is luchd-èisteachd ealanta nam measg gus còmhraidhean, seiseanan, bùthan-obrach agus taisbeanaidhean a chumail.
’S e amas na fhèille a bhith a’ comharrachadh agus a’ brosnachadh an ‘Carrying Stream’ (beul oideachas/beul aithris, sa Ghàidhlig) – an t-slighe nàdarrach anns a bheil ceòl, òrain, sgeulachdan agus cultar gan toirt seachad bho dhuine gu duine agus bho ghinealach gu ginealach. Thòisich an fhèill gu tùsail aig Edinburgh Folk Club, agus tha an SSC air leth toilichte a bhith an sàs san ath-bheothachadh aice am-bliadhna, còmhla ri caraidean is com-pàirtichean Dhùn Èideann.
