Under Your Skin: An Embodied Approach to Scary Stories

A playful, sensory, movement- based workshop co-led by storyteller Inés Álvarez Villa and Deaf BSL storyteller Tania Allan. Drawing on Inés’s embodied storytelling practice and teaching, and her six editions at the Edinburgh Horror Festival, alongside Tania’s visual storytelling techniques and the tradition of ghost storytelling within Deaf culture, the workshop explores how suspense and dread are built through silence, gesture, and atmosphere as much as through words.
Using props, vibration and sensory experiences, Deaf and hearing participants alike will explore how embodied storytelling builds confidence, creativity and connection while bringing spooky tales to life. BSL and English interpretation will be provided throughout.

This year’s Festival explores the rich relationship between storytelling and the natural world through our theme Bird and Beast. Alongside a vibrant programme at the Scottish Storytelling Centre in Edinburgh, storytellers across Scotland bring these tales to life this autumn through the Go Local programme. We proudly celebrate Scotland’s cèilidh tradition with an invitation into the story circle, extending a warm welcome to international guests who share their stories, traditions and contemporary practices alongside Scotland’s own world-class talent. Join us for some unforgettable tales and moments that bring us closer to nature, as we follow the trail of footprints and feathers and let our imagination take flight.
